The Charles McMicken Society honors the University of Cincinnati’s most important donors and connects them more strongly with UC and with each other.

The McMicken Society recognizes donors (individuals and couples) based upon their UC support within two distinct categories: Annual Giving of $1,000 and more, and Cumulative Giving (lifetime giving) of $100,000 and more.

Donors are honored at the following levels:

  • Annual Giving
    Bronze McMicken | $1,000 to $2,499
    Silver McMicken | $2,500 to $4,999
    Gold McMicken | $5,000 to $9,999
    Founder | $10,000+

  • Cumulative Giving

Objectives

Created in 1972, the McMicken Society recognizes and honors the University of Cincinnati’s most important individual donors. The Society’s mission is to connect donors with the University and with each other to build a strong, positive future for UC.

The Society’s objectives are:
  • Establish substantial annual gift support for UC’s expanding programs.
  • Create appropriate recognition for donor’s exceptional generosity.
  • Provide opportunities for increased donor involvement with the University.
  • Enhance donors’ awareness of the role higher education plays in contemporary society.

McMicken donors generate the most significant block of private, individual support received by the University each year. The Society is dedicated to UC’s goal of providing exceptional educational opportunities to the men and women who work toward their futures at the University of Cincinnati.

History

Charles McMicken (1782-1855) was a successful businessman with a very large dream. In pursuit of that dream, he bequeathed to Cincinnati his land and personal effects – with an estimated value of $900,000 – to establish an “institution of higher learning.” That institution became the University of Cincinnati.

The University’s first building was located on the site of McMicken’s home near the Clifton Incline. In 1895, UC built McMicken Hall, still guarded today by the stone lions Mick and Mack. A University college proudly bears his name: the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences.

The Charles McMicken Society commemorates a man who made educational excellence possible, and more – a man whose major gift is still vibrant, motivating others to emulate his generosity, making possible the educational quality found at the University of Cincinnati today.
